Abstract

Psychoactive substances are the chemicals which affect the central nervous system, there by altering mental functioning. Adolescents, typically aged 13-18, are at a stage where they constantly seek new and more exciting experiences. This desire often pushes them beyond the ordinary pleasures of daily life, leading them to explore substances that may provide temporary relief from monotony and offer a sense of altered perception. These experiences are appealing not only for their immediate effects but also because they allow the individual to feel distinct or different from others. However, problems arise when substance use becomes habitual, leading to cravings and worsening social, occupational, psychological, and physical issues. Therefore, it is crucial for adolescents to gain a deep understanding of the effects of psychoactive substances, as this knowledge can help prevent harmful patterns of use. In the pretest all adolescents (13-18years) had inadequate knowledge regarding effects of psychoactive substance use. In posttest 79% of adolescents had adequate knowledge and 21% had moderate knowledge .Overall Post-test mean knowledge score was 24.41 with standard deviation of 3.31, which was more than the pre-test mean score 6.26 with standard deviation of 2.26. This showed that informational booklet was effective. The paired ‘t’ test value on knowledge was 43.19 at p<0.05 level which is greater than the table value, this showed that there was significant difference between pre and post test scores on knowledge regarding effects of psychoactive substance use among the adolescents (13-18years). Therefore, Hypothesis (H1) was supported. No significant relationship was found between the pretest knowledge scores on the effects of psychoactive substance use and the demographic variables of adolescents aged 13-18. As a result, Hypothesis (H2) was not supported.
