Chemical species of metals affect toxicity but trends of these metals species in soils are less studied. This study examined the trends and variability of species of metals in soils from playgrounds within Owerri. Eighty-one composite soil samples from nine playgrounds were collected in dry and rainy season to reflect spatio-seasonal variability. Samples were characterized by standard methods in triplicates and then extracted sequentially. Concentrations of metal species were determined by A. Analyst 400 Perkin Elmer AAS, and data was assessed using chemometric models. Metal species followed the decreasing order: Residual > water soluble > exchangeable > Organic bound > carbonate bound > Fe – Mn oxides bound. Total extractible Zn > Mn > Cu > Ni, and Co were higher in the dry season though lower than WHO standards and values Correlation revealed that Mn-Ni, Co-Ni associations were weakly positive while Mn-Cu was strongly negative for all playgrounds. Metal stability decreased in the order: Ni > Ni > Cu > Co > Zn. To conclude, varying trends in chemical species were observed and could pose a health problem to children using these play grounds.
