Abstract

The global decline in fossil fuel availability, coupled with increasing concerns over climate change, has accelerated the search for sustainable and decentralized energy solutions. Agro-waste, particularly lignocellulosic food waste, has shown great promise as an alternative energy feedstock. This study explores the potential of pyrolysis technology for onsite energy production using fruit-based food waste collected from markets and food enterprises in Shendam Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. The selected biomass comprises banana peels, orange peels, watermelon peels, and mango endocarps, with each type contributing 25% of a total feed rate of 100 kg/h. A detailed process simulation of the pyrolysis system was conducted to evaluate syngas yield and power generation efficiency under varying reactor temperatures. Sensitivity analysis identified optimal thermal conversion within the 400-550 °C range. The system demonstrated significant energy recovery potential, with estimated operational and capital expenditures (OPEX and CAPEX) of approximately 3.88 × 10¹¹ USD/year and 8.05 million USD, respectively. Strong financial feasibility was demonstrated by the economic study, which revealed a payback period of six years and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 42%. The results suggest that pyrolysis of agro waste from Shendam Local Government offers a feasible, environmentally beneficial pathway for local energy production and waste valorization.
