Abstract

Abstract – This experimental study presents a comprehensive investigation into the tensile strength of TIG-welded butt joints made from Al-2014 alloy, a material that find applications in aerospace and structural engineering due to its excellent machinability and high strength to weight ratio. Welding Al-2014 alloy is challenging because it is more prone to hot cracking, oxide layer formation and thermal distortion. Therefore, it is very important to optimize welding parameters and joint design to obtain reliable welded structures. According to this viewpoint, the goal of this work is to comprehend how the groove angle affects the tensile strength of TIG-welded joints. The research specifically explores the impact of varying groove angles 45°, 60°, and 75° on the tensile strength of the welded joints. Specimens were carefully prepared using Al-2014 plates, confirming consistent dimensions and surface preparation to minimize experimental variations. Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding was used under controlled welding parameters to keep uniform weld quality across all test samples. The same process conditions were applied for each specimen having a particular grove angle in order to accurately assess the effect of angle alone. The experimental procedure involves conducting a series of tensile tests on TIG-welded butt joints of Al-2014 alloy, fabricated using different combinations of V-groove butt welding. The prepared specimens were subjected to standard tensile test on a Universal Testing Machine in accordance with relevant testing standards, and key parameters such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, etc. were recorded. The fracture surfaces of the tested specimens were also examined to identify the mode of failure and to understand the metallurgical characteristics influencing joint performance. The tensile test results were analyzed to evaluate the influence of welding angle on the strength of the welded joints. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the optimization of TIG welding processes for Al-2014 alloy, contributing to the development of high-strength welded joints for various engineering applications.
