Abstract
Kinetic parameters of crude oil degradation as related to total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) were evaluated. The experiment was set-up using crude oil, loamy soil polluted and addition of bio-stimulant (nutrient based substance). The depletion of the pollutant was monitored within the contact time of 7 to 35 days. At intervals of 7 days samples were collected and analyzed to determine the TPH concentration at each bioreactor set-up, through subjecting the samples into Gas Chromatography (GC) analyses. The obtain data were subjected into mathematical evaluation through establishing the relationship of substrate (TPH) degradation concentration with contact time for the purpose of extrapolating the specific rate of TPH degradation (velocity). A plot of the relationship of the specific rate of TPH degradation and TPH concentration degradation of its reciprocal form was achieved. This relationship is known as the LineWeaver Burk Plot which was derived from the Michaelis Menten Model. The relationship enhanced the determination of the kinetic parameters in the area of maximum specific rate of TPH degradation (Rmax) the equilibrium constant of TPH degradation (KTPH). The kinetic parameters are dependent of microbial growth and substrate utilization in each bioreactor, especially at progressive phase. The kinetic parameters are higher in the bioreactors that received the room dried thand sun-dried samples and less in control some of the kinetic parameters were not established because the adopted concept does not obey the Michalis Menten. However, the application of regression methods of plotting will demonstrate the equation of the linear line where the slope and intercept values can be equated to the established concept of
slope and
= intercept can be integrated for the purpose of determining the kinetic parameters. The investigation has shown the kinetic parameters values of the mint leaf (Mentha piperita) application in crude oil remediation using 50 g and 100 g dosage in loamy soil of 2 kg and 100 ml of crude oil used as pollutant
