Abstract
Leucorrhea, commonly defined as excessive vaginal discharge, is a prevalent concern among women of reproductive age. It can be broadly classified as physiological or pathological. Physiological leucorrhea is usually linked to normal hormonal fluctuations during puberty, ovulation, pregnancy, or the menstrual cycle and is generally harmless. In contrast, pathological leucorrhea may indicate underlying conditions, such as bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections, hormonal disturbances, poor genital hygiene, or, in rare cases, malignancies. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the etiology of leucorrhea, with a focus on differentiating normal from abnormal discharge based on characteristics, such as color, consistency, odor, and associated symptoms. It further examines current diagnostic approaches, including detailed patient history, clinical examination, and laboratory investigations, which are essential for accurate identification of the underlying cause. Management strategies are discussed in relation to the cause, ranging from patient education, lifestyle modification, and maintenance of genital hygiene in physiological cases to appropriate pharmacological interventions, such as antimicrobial or antifungal therapy, in pathological conditions. Additionally, recent advancements in diagnostic techniques and treatment options are highlighted, along with existing research gaps. A thorough understanding of leucorrhea is crucial for improving early diagnosis, guiding effective treatment, and enhancing overall reproductive health outcomes.
