Abstract
Street infrastructure is a vital component of smart city development. In this study, one of Pune’s busiest mobility corridors, the Jangali Maharaj (J.M.) Road, designed as a smart street, was studied for compliance with urban street design guidelines. Street infrastructure is broadly classified into three categories: street elements, safety features, and multi-utility zones. Street infrastructure is one of the elements used to assess the performance of the J.M. Road. A comparative study between the ideal and current situations was conducted to evaluate its effectiveness using Urban Street Design Guidelines. This study was conducted using a mixed-method approach, including visual surveys, on-site observation, and online user surveys to study the street infrastructure of J.M. Road. street infrastructure elements–footpaths, cycle tracks, bus stops, BRT lanes, carriageways, and on-street parking-were considered for evaluation. The result reveals a gap in design adequacy and universal design considerations that impact user experience. The assessment highlights the importance of integrating user needs with guideline-based street design for user comfort. This research helps urban planners to improve street infrastructure through design from the user’s perspective. Urban street design guidelines define ideal street accessibility, safety, and comfort. Following these guidelines makes the street highly effective. It is important to apply this type of analysis to all mobility corridors in Pune to make them smart streets, where pedestrian movement and safety are prioritized. The findings identify areas for improvement and establish a basis for enhancing the functional performance, accessibility, and inclusivity of the J.M. Road in compliance with urban street design guidelines.
