Abstract

Objective: The resilience of hospital buildings is measured in terms of hospital functionality against natural disasters. While adequate provisions are available to assess the structural safety of buildings there is a gap in assessing the functional performance of hospitals in case of patient influx. This paper presents academic literature on the resilience assessment of hospital building design. It also enlists the qualitative attributes of resilient design, planning and management for ensuring the resilience of large-scale hospital buildings. Method: An evidence-based methodology called, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) is adopted to conduct the systematic literature review. Through this process five (5) qualitative attributes of hospital resilience are identified: i. planning and development, ii. structure and built form, iii. Mechanical Engineering and Plumbing (MEP) services, iv. operations and maintenance v. facility and staff management. These attributes are sub-categorized into 69 indicators of hospital resilience. Conclusion: Critical indicators for measuring hospital resilience are derived using content analysis. The shortlisted attributes and indicators could also be useful in measuring the resilience of hospital buildings using a suitable assessment framework.
