Abstract

The choice of plantain stem, banana stem and palm oil fibre prepared for treatment of water medium polluted with petroleum hydrocarbon was monitored in a packed bed unit. The raw materials (plantain and banana stem as well as palm oil fibre) were room and sun dried and processed to obtained different particle size of 50, 150 µm and 200 µm. The raw material after processed was used as an adsorbent and the element in weight percent of each adsorbent was examine as demonstrated in this research. The morphology data of banana of room- dried and element weight percent is given as oxygen (22.2%), carbon (5.0%), sulphur (6.1%), silicon (45.4%), calcium (10.4%), magnesium (2.4%), iron (1.6%), sodium (2.7) and potassium (1.2%) whereas sun dried revealed carbon (20.24%), oxygen (25.30%), iron (1.2%), suphur (2.80%), potassium (2.15%), silicon (42.10%), calcium (1.83%), magnesium (1.24%) and sodium (3.10%). The plantain sun dried revealed calcium (5.0%), magnesium (3.0%), oxygen (16.0%), carbon (11.5%), silicon (48.0%), iron (10.3%), sodium (1.2%), potassium (1.0%) and sulphur (6.0%) whereas room dried demonstrates values of calcium (4.3%), magnesium (4.0%), oxygen (15.0%), carbon (8.5%), silicon (47.0%), iron (11.0%), potassium (3.0%), sodium (2.2%) and sulphur (5.0%). The composition and the morphology of the palm oil fibre was also examined and the obtained result demonstrates the following results of potassium (6.0%), oxygen (20.1%), silicon (48.0%), iron (3.0%), sulphur (8.0%), aluminum (12.6%) and calcium (2.30%) for room dried sample whereas for sun dried we have silicon (63.16%), magnesium (3.85%), calcium (4.70%), aluminum (5.90%), potassium (9.79%), sulpur (3.62%) and oxygen (8.9%). The medium in which the samples were prepared thoroughly influence the morphology and the composition of the adsorbent prepared for treatment of water medium contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon.
