Maximizing Void Properties from Optimized Local Pozzolans in Wearing Course of Bituminous Concrete Mixtures

Abstract

Failure of asphalt pavement has influenced research into better ways to optimize local pozzolans seenas waste and reduce cost of importation of admixtures. Waste Shell Ashes are checked as localassembled by incorporating them in asphalt concrete mix design. Different research has shown thatsome agricultural waste/by-products can be admitted as mineral fillers in hot-mix asphalt concrete toobtain certain desirable properties. It is on this basis that this research attempts to interrogate the effectof Periwinkle Shell Ash (PSA), Snail Shell Ash (SSA); PSA-SSA blends respectively on void propertiesof asphalt concrete. An experimental approach was adopted to accomplish this goal using the MarshalMix design method to prepare representative samples. Stability and flow were gained using the Marshalapparatus, while the Asphalt Institute Models was used to obtain some of the focus parameters. Theresults show that the voids properties, such as f, air voids (Va) and voids in mineral accumulate (VMA),captured from the PSA-SSA modified HMA concrete was better than that of the conventional(unmodified) HMA concrete due to the addition of these pozzolans (Snail and Periwinkle Shell Ashesas blend- SSA-PSA)). However, PSA-SSA Blends Optimized at 6% content by weight of aggregates andwas the threshold, where it attains maximum values of the void’s properties. However, to gain maximumvalue from a PSA-SSA blend, the pozzolans must not exceed 6% by weight of aggregates.
