Flutter study of a solar powered high-altitude long endurance UAV
Abstract: This paper presents an aero-elastic flutter analysis on a high altitude long endurance unmanned air vehicle. Numerical finite element analysis (FEA) based simulations for flutter have been carried using the commercial FEA package ANSYS. Analytical flutter analysis is performed to verify the FEA results. The analytic flutter analysis gives the divergence speed to be 32.7 m/sec. The numerical flutter analysis of the rudder shows the bending and torsional modes for …

Vibration Analysis of Sandwich Beams Using 3-Noded Beam Element
Abstract: One-dimensional 3-noded finite element model is developed in this paper for the vibrational analysis of composite sandwich beam for various boundary conditions, using the efficient layer wise zigzag theory. To come across the convergence necessities for the weak integral formulation, fifth power Hermite interpolation is utilized for the transverse displacement and quadratic interpolation is utilized for the axial displacement and shear rotation. Element every node has four degrees of freedom. …

Compressive Behaviour of Pristine and Impacted Composite Laminates: Numerical Simulations and Experimental Studies
Abstract: To predict the compressive strength, various failure criteria studied in this article include are Tsai-Wu, Hill, Hoffman, Maximum Stress and Quadratic. The quadratic failure criterion has been implemented using PATRAN Command Language (PCL). Is observed that quadratic failure criterion provides least failure indices, employed for conservative design. The compressive strength of the pristine and impacted laminate computed using analytical experiment, and finite element analysis (Numerical) commercial packages. Experimental program employing …

Ship Collision analysis of tanker using finite element method at high and low impact velocities
Abstract: The aim of this paper presents a study of ships collision to improve crashworthiness of double side tanker ships and minimize accidental oil spills in the event of collision. Structural design of ships against collision requires prediction of the extent of damage to ship structures subjected to impact. Ship design against conventional loads such as shearing, bending and local buckling and the accidental loads requires applying different stiffening systems for …

Evaluation of Various Numerical Methods in Large Scale FE Simulation Codes for 3D Crack Propagation
Abstract: In this paper, four different numerical methods implemented in the large scale simulation code LS-DYNA are evaluated to determine their abilities and limitations in fracture problems especially 3-d crack propagation problems. Similar formulations are implemented in the code ABAQUS as well. These methods are: Finite Element Method (FEM), Discrete Element Method (DEM), Element Free Galerkin (EFG) method and Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM). Their methodologies are briefly described and several …
