This study assessed the physicochemical properties and heavy metal contamination of Nworie River during the dry season. Fifteen composite water samples were collected from strategic points along the river. In-situ measurements of pH, temperature, and electrical conductivity were undertaken, while laboratory analyses determined heavy metal concentrations. Pollution Load Index and Contamination Factor were employed to evaluate the overall water quality and contamination levels. Results indicated moderate to high levels of heavy metal contamination at specific sites, with cadmium exhibiting the highest CF (60). Zinc and copper showed relatively moderate contamination. The PLI trend revealed a decreasing order of contamination risk across the sampling sites. The Water Quality Index ranged from 93.04 to 127.1, suggesting a slightly poor water quality, necessitating minimal treatment for domestic consumption. However, the water’s suitability for irrigation was confirmed by its low sodium and sodium adsorption ratio, as well as a favorable cation ratio of structural stability. In conclusion, while Nworie River experiences elevated heavy metal contamination during the dry season, its potential for irrigation remains promising. Further monitoring and potential remediation strategies are recommended to mitigate the impact of heavy metal pollution on the river’s ecosystem and human health.
