Abstract

Because it embodies the traditional knowledge and skill of local communities, vernacular architecture is an essential manifestation of cultural identity. The use of regionally specific materials, construction methods, and designs tailored to local environmental circumstances are characteristics of this architectural style, which all represent the unique heritage and values of the communities involved. However, maintaining vernacular architecture has grown more difficult due to the quick speed of urbanisation and global modernisation. Numerous factors, such as the need to modernise, changes in lifestyle, and the pursuit of economic growth, pose a threat to the structures and may cause them to gradually deteriorate. The goal of this research is to examine and evaluate the different challenges associated with preserving vernacular architecture, especially in light of urbanisation. The impact of government policies, which can help or hurt preservation efforts; the general lack of public knowledge about the cultural and historical significance of these buildings; the influence of tourism, which can be profitable but frequently results in commercialisation that can undermine the authenticity of vernacular sites; and environmental degradation, which can physically jeopardise the structural integrity of these buildings, are some of the important factors that were examined. The assessment outlines possible preservation tactics in response to these issues, including the adoption of sustainable methods to guarantee longevity, community-based conservation initiatives that involve local communities, and the adaptive reuse of vernacular buildings. In order to successfully preserve vernacular heritage and ensure its continuity and resilience in the face of contemporary changes, the paper’s conclusion highlights the significance of cooperation between legislators, heritage experts, and local people. In order to preserve the cultural past ingrained in vernacular architecture, a balance between heritage preservation and the needs of modern development must be struck.
