Bhuleshwar, one of the oldest commercial precincts in South Mumbai, represents a unique urban landscape where traditional markets, religious institutions, historic architecture, and craft-based economies coexist within a dense mixed-use environment. Renowned for its imitation jewellery trade, flower markets, textile shops, and temple precincts, the area serves as an important cultural and economic hub. However, rapid urbanization, aging infrastructure, overcrowding, traffic congestion, deteriorating building conditions, inadequate sanitation, and redevelopment pressures have increasingly threatened both the physical fabric and the intangible cultural heritage of the precinct. Conventional redevelopment approaches often prioritize real estate development over heritage conservation, leading to the displacement of artisan communities and the gradual erosion of local identity. This study investigates the concept of heritage-sensitive redevelopment as a sustainable strategy for revitalizing Bhuleshwar while safeguarding its historic character and traditional livelihoods. The research adopts a qualitative methodology involving field observations, heritage walk surveys, photographic documentation, spatial mapping, and an extensive review of literature, planning policies, and conservation frameworks. The analysis identifies the key spatial, social, cultural, and infrastructural challenges affecting the precinct and evaluates opportunities for integrating heritage conservation with contemporary urban development. Based on the findings, the paper proposes planning and design strategies including cluster redevelopment, adaptive reuse of historic buildings, improved pedestrian mobility, enhanced public infrastructure, façade conservation, stakeholder participation, and dedicated craft-support spaces. These recommendations aim to strengthen economic resilience, improve the quality of life for residents and traders, and preserve Bhuleshwar's living heritage. The study concludes that heritage-sensitive redevelopment offers a balanced and sustainable framework capable of accommodating urban growth while protecting the cultural identity, historic significance, and community networks that define one of Mumbai's most important traditional market districts.
