Abstract
In nursing education lecture and demonstration is one of the most common methods of teaching learning session to deliver knowledge. It has been suggested that teaching learning methods that enhance engagement and encourage self-learning concepts leading to increased knowledge. Electrocardiography (ECG) is a widely utilized diagnostic tool in cardiology, playing a crucial role in diagnosing and managing heart-related conditions. For nursing students, acquiring knowledge and hands-on experience in ECG interpretation is essential to provide quality care for patients with cardiac issues. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a teaching and learning session on nursing students' knowledge and skills in ECG interpretation, specifically for myocardial infarction (MI) and proper lead placement. The sample comprised 49 nursing students selected using purposive sampling. Data was gathered through a structured questionnaire to assess their knowledge and an observational checklist to assess their practical skills. The results showed a marked improvement in both knowledge and practice. The mean post-test knowledge score increased to 31.65 (SD = 2.8) compared to the pre-test score of 13.7 (SD = 3.07). Similarly, the post-test practice score was 23.2 (SD = 1.1), significantly higher than the pre-test practice score of 6.1 (SD = 2.4). Based on these results, the study concluded that continuous educational sessions can significantly enhance the competency of nursing students in ECG interpretation and practical application.
