Abstract

Industrial biotechnology has emerged as a pivotal field in addressing global environmental challenges, particularly in the context of waste management. Waste-to-value processes, which utilize bioconversion techniques, have gained significant attention as they provide sustainable pathways to convert waste materials into valuable bioproducts. These processes harness microbial metabolism, enzymatic reactions, and biotechnological advancements to transform organic waste into useful products such as biofuels, bioplastics, chemicals, and other high- value biochemicals. This review examines the innovations in industrial biotechnology, focusing on bioconversion technologies that optimize the conversion of diverse waste streams into valuable products. The paper highlights recent breakthroughs in the application of microorganisms, enzymes, and metabolic engineering for efficient waste valorization. Moreover, it addresses the challenges of scalability, economic feasibility, and regulatory considerations that impact the widespread adoption of waste-to-value technologies. Key examples of successful applications in the food, agricultural, and industrial sectors are discussed, alongside future prospects for the development of biotechnological solutions to tackle pressing environmental issues. Finally, the paper outlines the future directions and the immense potential for advancing waste-to-value technologies to create a more sustainable circular economy.
