Abstract

This paper explores the theoretical frameworks that underpin the study of cultural landscapes in the context of India. It encompasses various perspectives, each offering unique insights into the intricate narratives woven into the land. The discussion begins with an examination of cultural geography, emphasizing the evolving conceptions of 'culture' and its relationship with geography. Ethnoarchaeology is then introduced as a method to understand the interplay between artifact variability and human behavior, shedding light on how contemporary practices shape cultural landscapes. The concept of sacred geography delves into the spiritual significance attributed to certain landscapes, while the anthropology of space considers the cultural meanings embedded in landscapes and their symbolic representation. Additionally, Indigenous Knowledge Systems are highlighted for their role in preserving traditional wisdom and shaping cultural landscapes over generations. This review aims to offer a thorough understanding of the varied narratives present in Indian cultural landscapes through diverse theoretical perspectives.
