Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive assessment of sustainability measures and resource optimization strategies for the expansion of metallurgical and alloy production facilities in Odisha, India. The research examines a facility expansion project encompassing 32.63 hectares, analyzing environmental impacts, resource utilization, and socioeconomic implications. The study evaluates key sustainability parameters including air quality management through ESPs and bag filters maintaining PM emissions below 30 mg/Nm³, water resource optimization with a projected demand of 2,916 KLD, and power generation through waste heat recovery systems producing 46 MW. The implementation of a 160 KLD effluent treatment plant and a 45 KLD sewage treatment plant ensures zero liquid discharge, while comprehensive solid waste management strategies focus on recycling and reuse of by-products. The project incorporates extensive greenbelt development covering 33.55% of the total area with 32,206 planned saplings. Environmental monitoring reveals compliance with regulatory standards, with ambient air quality parameters (PM10: 49.5–90.4 µg/m³, PM2.5: 26.5–50.2 µg/m³) within permissible limits. The expansion is projected to generate 3,600 employment opportunities and includes significant community development initiatives. A dedicated budget of ₹40.60 crores for environmental protection measures demonstrates the project’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth. The findings highlight the successful integration of environmental conservation, resource efficiency, and socioeconomic development in industrial expansion projects, providing a model for sustainable metallurgical operations in developing regions.
