Abstract
Corrosion affects many sectors, including industries, railways, transportation systems, marine environments, construction, housing components, engineering tools, metallic structures, and even biomedical implants. Due to corrosion, major financial losses occur in these fields. Corrosion takes place because of changes in the internal morphology of materials, or the attack of corrosive substances present in the environment. These unfavorable physical, chemical, and biochemical reactions lead to various forms of corrosion such as galvanic corrosion between similar and dissimilar metals, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, embrittlement, and blistering. Although corrosion cannot be completely avoided, its cost can be minimized through proper mitigation strategies. The primary duty of a corrosion engineer is to apply scientific techniques to control corrosion-related expenditure in a practical manner. Important corrosion protection techniques include cathodic and anodic protection, the use of inhibitors, composite barrier coatings, nanocoatings, development of corrosion-resistant alloys, and appropriate heat treatment methods. Several approaches are applied for corrosion mitigation such as proper selection of metals and alloys, coating with non-metallic materials, modification of the surrounding environment, electrochemical protection methods, proper engineering design, use of inhibitors, and advanced nanocoatings.
