Pressure ulcers, also known as bed sores, represent a critical challenge in modern healthcare, particularly among immobilized and critically ill patients, leading to increased morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and higher healthcare costs. Recent advancements in smart healthcare technologies have enabled the development of smart hospital bed systems that integrate sensors, automation, and artificial intelligence to prevent and manage pressure ulcers effectively. These systems incorporate features such as pressure redistribution, automatic repositioning, real-time monitoring, and data-driven decision support to enhance patient care outcomes. This article explores the concept, design, functionality, and clinical significance of smart hospital bed systems in preventing and managing pressure ulcers. It also discusses technological integration, nursing implications, benefits, challenges, and future prospects, providing a comprehensive understanding of their role in transforming patient-centered care. Evidence from recent studies indicates that such systems can significantly reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers and improve healthcare efficiency, thereby highlighting their importance in modern hospital settings.
