Abstract

The adaptive reuse of historic buildings plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable practices that can substantially lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with the construction materials industry, thereby effectively combating climate change and preserving our natural resources. Currently, professionals and property owners lack focal points to validate and evaluate their decision-making processes regarding adaptation practices. This study analyzed the key factors influencing decision-making related to the adaptive reuse of historic structures within the framework of sustainable development among practitioners. Additionally, it examines the methodologies employed by these professionals to assess the viability of existing buildings for adaptive reuse. The research identified that the main considerations for professionals when determining the adaptive reuse of historic or heritage buildings encompass:structural integrity, conversion and operational costs, environmental sustainability, heritage value, health and safety considerations, legal requirements, compliance with sustainable development standards, and market demand. Collectively, these factors represent eight essential success criteria. Consequently, this research established a comprehensive database that addresses knowledge gaps and offers a clear decision-making framework that encourages sustainable practices in the adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
