Abstract

Nonwoven polypropylene (NWPP) fabric is a versatile material used predominantly in medical field for hygiene products and for PPE applications. The application of NWPP is limited in disinfectant area due to lack of antimicrobial properties and its non-polar nature. The coating of antimicrobial agents on NWPP fibre is expected to lower down the intensity of communicable microbial infections. The present study involves the surface functionalization of NWPP fibre via plasma treatment followed by thin coating of halogenated butyl rubber. The surface-modified NWPP fabric was coated with different antimicrobial agents. In the present study involves the investigation on broad range of organic and inorganic antimicrobial reagents in solution and dispersion phase for biological activities. The study is further extended to the antiviral testing against MS2 bacteriophage, and the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia. Excellent antiviral and antibacterial activities are observed of more than 99% for these antimicrobial agents.
