Cryogenic Electron Microscopy Reveals Conformational Dynamics and Catalytic Mechanisms of Human Fatty Acid Synthase in De Novo Lipid Biosynthesis
Abstract: Fatty acid synthase (FASN) is a multifunctional homodimeric enzyme central to de novo fatty acid synthesis in mammals. Recent cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) studies have illuminated the structural basis of FASN catalysis, revealing multiple conformational states throughout the synthesis cycle. These findings show that the acyl carrier protein (ACP) domain dynamically shuttles substrates between spatially separated active sites, while the condensing and modifying regions remain structurally stable. In contrast to …

Red Yeast as a Sustainable Platform for Bio-Oil and Natural Pigment Production
Abstract: Oleaginous yeast represents a promising biotechnological platform for the sustainable production ofbio-oil, an alternative to fossil-derived fuels. These microorganisms can accumulate lipids up to 20–70% of their dry cell weight, primarily in the form of triacylglycerols that are structurally similar toplant and animal oils. Among them, certain species exhibit distinctive red or pink pigmentation andare collectively referred to as red yeasts. These yeasts not only synthesize significant amounts ofstorage lipids …

Turmeric and Its Mechanisms in Aging and Associated Conditions
Abstract: A gradual deterioration in physiological processes and heightened vulnerability to illnesses are hallmarks of aging, an unavoidable biological process. Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a staple in traditional medicine, has gained recognition for its role in mitigating the effects of aging and age-associated conditions. The therapeutic potential of turmeric is largely attributed to curcumin, its primary bioactive compound, which exhibits diverse pharmacological properties. Curcumin’s antioxidative capacity combats oxidative stress, a major driver …
