One of the main elements restricting a variety's ability to respond in a breeding program is the environment. This is why, in 2021 and 2022 at Derashe and in 2022 at Gerese, five improved sorghum varieties and one standard check were assessed to find more productive midland sorghum types. A randomized complete block with three replications was used in the experiment. Significant differences between treatments of the investigated variables were shown by the analysis of variance that took into account the interplay of environment and genetics. The variations were examined and suggested for particular environmental adaption due to the variability of error variance. The highest average grain yield was recorded from the varieties, Merara (2323 kg/ha) in 2021 and Chamada (2786 kg/ha) in 2022 at Derashe and from Lalo (3909 kg/ha) at Gerese in 2022 cropping seasons. The varieties, Bonsa, Gemedi and Merara had a yield advantage of 47-69% over a local check at Derashe in 2021. Whereas, varieties, Gemedi, Merara, and Chemada had a yield advantage of 38-50% over a local check at Derashe in 2022. On the other hand, varieties, Gemedi, Chemada and Lalo had a yield advantage of 30-60% over local checks at Gerese in 2022. Therefore, Gemedi and Merara are preferred at Derashe whereas Gemedi, Chemada, and Lalo at Gerese because they yield more than other varieties. Therefore, it is advised to continue producing these varieites in tested and other comparable settings.
