Abstract

Background: A Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) occurs when microorganisms enter a patient’s bloodstream through a central venous catheter. These infections are potentially life-threatening but largely preventable through proper infection control practices. Nurses play a critical role in implementing evidence-based preventive measures to reduce the incidence of CLABSIs. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a video-assisted teaching program in improving staff nurses’ knowledge regarding the prevention of CLABSIs. Design and Setting: A pre-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design was adopted. The study was conducted at Dhanvantri Critical Care Centre, Erode. Participants and Methods: Thirty staff nurses aged 20–50 years, working in the emergency department and intensive care unit with less than three years of experience, were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire. The pre-test was administered before the intervention, followed by a video-assisted teaching program. After 15 days, a post-test was conducted using the same tool. Results: The findings revealed a significant improvement in knowledge scores following the intervention. The mean pre-test score was 9.2 ± 0.72 (46%), which increased to 18.4 ± 1.78 (92%) in the post-test, showing a 46% improvement. The calculated paired t-value (18.21) exceeded the table value (2.15), indicating a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). A significant association was found between post-test knowledge and variables such as experience and educational qualification. Conclusion: The video-assisted teaching program was highly effective in enhancing nurses’ knowledge regarding CLABSI prevention, emphasizing the importance of continuous education in clinical practice.
