Abstract
Classical thermodynamics, a fundamental branch of physics and engineering, provides a macroscopic
framework for understanding energy, work, and heat interactions in physical systems. This review
comprehensively examines the principles, laws, and practical applications of classical
thermodynamics, emphasizing its enduring relevance in modern science and engineering. Beginning
with the foundational concepts of system, surroundings, state, and equilibrium, the study explores the
formulation and significance of the four laws of thermodynamics. The Zeroth Law establishes the basis
for temperature measurement and thermal equilibrium, while the First Law formalizes the conservation
of energy, linking internal energy changes to heat and work interactions. The Second Law introduces
the concept of entropy, governing the direction of natural processes and defining the limits of energy
conversion efficiency, whereas the Third Law provides insights into absolute entropy at near-zero
temperatures. This review highlights classical thermodynamics’ pivotal role in analyzing engines,
refrigerators, chemical reactions, and phase transitions, demonstrating its applicability across diverse
fields such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and environmental science.
Methodological approaches, including the use of thermodynamic potentials, equations of state, and
energy diagrams, are discussed to illustrate the quantitative and predictive capabilities of the
discipline. Additionally, the paper addresses common misconceptions and limitations, particularly in
relation to non-equilibrium systems and microscopic interpretations, emphasizing the need for careful
application of classical concepts alongside statistical and quantum thermodynamics. By integrating
theoretical foundations with practical examples, this review underscores the importance of classical
thermodynamics as a cornerstone of scientific understanding and technological innovation. The paper
concludes by identifying emerging research directions, including energy efficiency optimization,
sustainable systems design, and interdisciplinary applications, highlighting the continuing evolution
and relevance of classical thermodynamic principles in addressing contemporary scientific and
engineering challenges.
