Rubber epoxidation is usually carried out to serve dual purpose, to introduce the functionality, and to enhance the polymer – filler interaction. In general, epoxidation of elastomers having unsaturation in backbone adopt conventional refluxing and batch process which makes the synthesis complex as well as time consuming. In view of this, a novel process of epoxidation through sonication technique is identified as simple and efficient process. Synthetic rubbers containing unsaturation in backbone viz., polybutadiene, styrene butadiene and butyl rubbers were epoxidized using sonication and found to be highly efficient compared to conventional process. Effect of peroxide content and sonication time on the extent of epoxidation studied in detail. Further silica composites were prepared with epoxidized rubber and evaluated for green tire application.
