Abstract

A shiny needle-shaped polycrystalline chalcogenide compound, SbSeI, was synthesized through a solid-state thermal reaction by combining the constituent elements in a stoichiometric ratio within an evacuated quartz tube at 585°C for 3.5 hours. The resulting compound was characterized using SEM, EDAX, and XRD techniques to confirm its structure and composition. The resistance versus temperature curve revealed the semiconducting nature of the material with a resistivity of 3.5 x 10⁷ Ω-cm and an activation energy for electrical conduction of 1.93 eV. Additionally, the dielectric constant was measured to be 10434, indicative of strong dielectric properties, potentially useful for high-frequency applications. The photoconductive properties of the compound were analyzed in the visible light spectrum, showing significant absorption in the green light range (520 nm to 560 nm), consistent with UV-VIS absorption data. The optical band gap was determined to be 1.5 eV, aligning well with the material’s photoconductive behavior. These findings suggest that SbSeI is a strong candidate for optoelectronic devices, particularly in photodetectors, solar cells, and other light-sensitive applications. The scalability of the synthesis process, combined with its promising electronic and optical properties, positions SbSeI as a material with broad technological potential in advanced electronics and energy conversion systems
