This study focuses on the application of natural dyes, specifically those derived from onion (Allium
cepa) extracts, for dyeing nylon fabric, while assessing the impact of different mordants, including
potassium dichromate, copper sulfate, and alum. The research explores the effectiveness of High
Temperature High Pressure dyeing techniques to enhance dye uptake and color fastness. Natural
dyes, traditionally viewed as less effective than synthetic counterparts, are being reevaluated for their
eco-friendly attributes and lower environmental impact. In this context, we investigate the dyeing
characteristics of onion extracts and their potential to impart vibrant hues to nylon fabrics. The use of
mordants plays a crucial role in determining the final color and fastness of the dyed fabric. Thus, this
study examines how varying mordant types influence the dyeing efficiency and the resultant fastness
properties, including light, wash, and rubbing fastness. Through spectrophotometric analysis, we
quantify the absorption properties of the dyed fabric, providing a comprehensive assessment of color
intensity and shade variation. The findings reveal that fabrics dyed with onion extracts demonstrate
promising fastness properties, making them viable alternatives to synthetic dyes. Additionally, this
research underscores the importance of sustainable practices within the textile industry, advocating
for the adoption of natural dyeing processes that minimize environmental impact while maintaining
high aesthetic and functional quality in textile applications. The implications of this study extend
beyond mere dyeing techniques, encouraging a broader shift towards sustainability in textile
manufacturing.
