As India’s cities grow quickly and its population changes, urban housing has become a major issue. More than a third of the population today lives in cities, and that number is expected to reach almost 50% by 2050. This has led to a huge increase in the need for affordable and decent housing. Both opportunities and problems come with this growth. On the one hand, cities are becoming places where businesses thrive, bringing in money and creating jobs. On the other side, the lack of housing and infrastructure in cities that can keep up with demand has led to acute shortages, soaring property prices, and the growth of slums and informal settlements. Rapid urbanization, population growth, and economic growth are all changing urban housing in India in a big way. This article looks at the most important trends that are affecting housing in cities such as the growth of affordable housing, more private sector participation, and the use of smart and eco-friendly building technology. It also talks about important problems, including not enough housing, the growth of slums, problems with regulations, and differences in access to housing based on income and social status. The report examines governmental initiatives, such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and urban planning frameworks, emphasizing the necessity for coordinated, inclusive, and sustainable strategies to address the housing needs of an expanding urban populace. The article ends with policy suggestions for fixing structural problems and making housing fairer in cities in India.
