Abstract

One of the most prevalent neurological conditions is headache. According to estimates, about 50% of adults experienced a headache at least once in the previous 12 months. A headache has a significant impact on a person’s life and interferes with social, professional, and recreational activities. The main aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with headache among students at selected college, Coimbatore. A Quantitative, non-experimental descriptive design was adopted in the study. By using non-probability convenience sampling technique with 100 study participants were selected based on inclusion criteria. Assessment on demographic variables, clinical variables, and the prevalence was assessed by using semi-structured interview questionnaire. It was identified that the prevalence of headache was 84% and the associated factors were bright light (p=0.009), stress (p=0.000), weather changes (p=0.05), duration of sleep (p=0.02), and digital eye strain of eye discomfort (p=0.04), location of headache which includes top of the head (p=0.01), frequency of headache (p=0.009),timing of headache which includes night (p=0.000), morning and afternoon  (p=0.01)Taking over the counter drugs to relieve headache was observed statistically significant at p=0.004. Hence, it was concluded that the factors of headache were bright light, stress, weather changes, duration of sleep and digital eyestrain of eye discomfort which provided an important reference for promoting healthy environment among Arts and science students and headache education on strategies for managing these factors should be an effectively implemented among the selected samples.
