Abstract

The increasing global aging population has highlighted the need for effective interventions to improve the quality of life for older adults. Among these interventions, physical therapy (PT) plays a crucial role in preventing disability and enhancing functional independence in seniors. This article explores the benefits of physical therapy in preventing disability among older adults, focusing on how PT contributes to improving mobility, strength, balance, and overall well-being. Physical therapy interventions, such as strength training, balance exercises, and flexibility training, have been shown to reduce the risk of falls, improve cardiovascular health, and manage chronic conditions common among older adults, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Additionally, PT aids in reducing pain, enhancing mobility, and preventing the development of secondary complications related to inactivity. This review aims to highlight the various ways in which physical therapy can prevent disability in older adults, emphasizing evidence-based practices that can be incorporated into clinical settings and daily routines. The findings suggest that a proactive approach to physical therapy, focusing on prevention rather than treatment, can help maintain independence and improve the overall health of the aging population.
