The real struggle is to distinguish what is real and what is fake in the communication of the hyper-digitalized age, in which AI and generative technologies significantly impact the field of communication. The change in the creation and consumption of information has come with the deepfake AI-generated fake media that can imitate a human in voice, image, and video. However, on the one hand, generative models such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and diffusion models are a great source of innovation in the areas of entertainment, education, and design; on the other hand, their bad use has heightened the risks of misinformation, identity theft, and reputational damage. At the same time, the emergence of AI-fabricated fake news, generally large language models (LLMs)-based, has escalated the number of deceptive stories in the social, political, and economic domains. These manipulated materials are hardly distinguishable since modern deep-learning models develop rapidly, and digital spreading is simple. The present paper highlights the problem of deepfakes globally and locally (in India), besides discussing the available technological, ethical, and legal solutions. It points out the defects of the Indian regulatory framework, such as the limitations of the Information Technology Act (2000) and the unorganized system of digital identity protection. To fill these holes, the paper proposes the Digital Likeness and Integrity Framework (DLIF) – a comprehensive model that integrates AI-powered detection, blockchain authentication, and governance concepts. The framework is intended to facilitate digital legitimacy, accountability, and protection of individual rights when synthetic media are becoming more prevalent.
