Bioaccumulation, Bioconcentration, and Biomagnification: Justification for Expediting the Clean-up of Contaminated Mangroves in Ogoniland
Abstract: Mangroves, which once served as natural reservoir of beneficial seafood to the inhabitants of ogoniland, an oil-rich community in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, now, pose serious ecological and health risks to the people. Crude oil exploration and exploitation in this region have brought about increased release of harmful chemical substances into these mangrove environments. These chemicals build up in the native flora and fauna associated with the ecosystem …

Assessing the Impact of Heavy Metal Contamination on Okra: A Study of Zinc and Cadmium Bioaccumulation
Abstract: Recently, concerns have been raised regarding environmental contamination by heavy metals, which pose significant risks to agriculture and human health. Industrial and domestic waste discharge into the environment contributes to the accumulation of toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in soil and water. These metals, when absorbed by plants, lead to physiological, morphological, and biochemical disruptions, including chlorosis, necrosis, and reduced crop yield. Furthermore, excessive metal concentrations …

In Vitro Evaluation of Bioremediation Capacity of a Commercial Probiotic, Bacillus clausii, for Chromium (VI) and Lead (II) Toxicity
Abstract: Heavy metals cause disastrous effects on any living organisms. Probiotics have the ability to reduce metal toxicity. Commercial probiotics having bioremediation capacity can use these bacteria as an alternative to conventional remediation methods. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals including chromium (VI) (Cr [VI]) and lead (II) (Pb [II]) causes fatal toxicity in humans. Some naturally occurring bacterial species, such as Bacillus and Pseudomonas, contribute their role in bioremediation of these …

Solution to the Arsenic Problem in West Bengal: Exploring Some Non-Conventional Ways
Abstract: Some districts of West Bengal have severe arsenic contamination of soil and groundwater. The clinical manifestations of arsenic toxicity include severe skin lesions; diseases of respiratory, cardiovascular, excretory system, hepatological, haematological and neurological disorders; and even death. We have isolated arsenic-resistant bacteria which have the adaptability to survive in high arsenic concentration, accumulate arsenic and convert it to its less toxic form. Therefore, we propose bioremediation as a cost-effective and …

Analytical Evaluation of heavy metals in eyeshadows: A Risk assessment and Implications for Public Health Regulatory Reforms in Nigeria
Abstract: This study employs advanced analytical techniques to assess heavy metal contamination (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn) in 18 commercially available eyeshadow products (local and imported) from Owerri Metropolis, Nigeria. Quantification was conducted using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), while risk evaluations incorporated chemometric modeling approaches. Results revealed significant contamination in locally manufactured brands, particularly those containing calabash chalk (Nzu) as a base ingredient. Lead and nickel concentrations reached 166.58 ± 6.5 …

Nanoparticles for Broiler Nutrition: Enhancing Growth, Feed Efficiency, Health, and Welfare of the Broiler Chicken
Abstract: Nanotechnology offers transformative potential for broiler nutrition by enabling enhanced nutrient delivery, efficiency, and health outcomes in poultry production. This review explores the applications, mechanisms, and impacts of incorporating nanoparticles, such as nano-minerals (e.g., zinc, selenium, and copper), nano-encapsulated bioactives, and other functional nano-additives, into broiler diets. Nanoparticles, owing to their increased surface area and enhanced bioavailability, have shown promise in improving nutrient absorption, promoting immune function, and supporting overall …

Nanomaterials as Promising Agents for Microplastic Reduction in Water Systems: A Review
Abstract: Microplastics pollution in water bodies has emerged as a global environmental concern, posing significant threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health due to its perseverance, bioaccumulation, and potential toxicity. Traditional removal techniques for contaminants in water treatment include sedimentation, adsorption, and filtration, each utilizing distinct methods to separate and eliminate pollutants. Techniques adopted for microplastics removal are not efficient and cause several environmental issues. To overcome the drawbacks of such …

A Pre-domestic Approach for Farm Animal Production: Free Range, Resource-efficient, Organic-driven and Fair-trade-directed
Abstract: Food security and Human Nutrition are two topics of interest for modern world farming. Food scarcity does not allow proper nutrient intake in some areas of the modern world and even in locations where food is abundant concern is persistent given the use of bioaccumulable agrochemicals for their production. Animal welfare is also a modern concern. To this regard, organic and free-range farming meet the demand of a reduced number …

Fate and Distribution of Pesticides Residues in Water Sources in Nigeria: A Review
Abstract: The availability of safe and clean water access is very important for a healthy population. In this study, we reviewed the distribution of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in water sources in Nigeria. The reviewed studies showed that OCPs and OPs concentration in Nigerian surface water and sediments are high and at present the use of organochlorines and organophosphorous synthetic pesticide in agricultural and industrial sectors has created as a significant …
