ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION: A STUDY

  1. Harjas Kaur Ramgadiya

Abstract

Animal experimentation--which is both complex and controversial--is the subject of this study. It aims to untangle some of its ethical knots, trace its historical shifts, and slice through the legal boundaries that mark it out. Animal experimentation is unavoidable in biomedical and toxicological research. This research explores the perplexing ethical evaluation of animal use, balancing the intentional pain and suffering that such use means for these sentient beings with scientific advancement. It also points up the continuing scientific deficiencies in animal studies, casting doubt on whether any findings can be said to have translational relevance for humans. With the ethical problem of animal experimentation unresolved, the study aims to define and describe this practice. It will also explore legal and regulatory landscapes with respect to it. Moreover, it examines novel approaches and new technologies that are currently under development which may lessen or even replace the animal component in scientific research. Three pivotal questions guide this inquiry: But what does animal experimentation consist of, and just how common is it? What legal structures exist to protect the ethical treatment of animals in research? Ultimately, what are some appealing choices for addressing the ethical issues associated with animal experimentation? It also reveals the delicate balance between ethical obligations and scientific advancement that has been pursued through a careful explication of this topic. Aim: To study the many facets of animal experimentation, including its ethical implications, historical development, and legal context; to evaluate the potential of new approaches toward efficient and ethical scientific research. Objective: To define and characterize animal experimentation. (1) To examine the legal and regulatory frameworks governing animal research., (2) To identify alternative methods and technologies that can potentially replace or reduce the use of animal in scientific research. Research questions: (1) what is animal experimentation and areas of extent? (2) what legal frameworks and regulations are in place to govern the use of animal in research? (3) what alternatives can be used instead of animal in experimentation.
