Abstract
Background of the study: Vitamin A deficiency is inadequate intake of vitamin A or its inadequate absorption in the body. It’s most prevalent in age group of 0–5 years. Aim: The present study aims to assess the effectiveness of Self-Instructional Module on the knowledge and attitude regarding vitamin A deficiency and its prophylaxis among mothers of Under-Five Children in the community area at Sri Goindwal Sahib, Tarn-Taran, Punjab. Methodology: A Quantitative research approach was used and a Quasi-experimental research design was adopted. Snowball Sampling Technique was used to select 60 subjects. A Self-Structured Questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge whereas the Likert Scale was used to assess the attitude. Result: The results of present study elucidates that in the Pre-test 56.66% mothers had poor knowledge, 43.33% had average knowledge and not a single mother met the criteria of good knowledge. In the Post-test, majority of mothers had good knowledge (81.66%) followed by average knowledge (16.66%) and only 1.66% mothers had poor knowledge. The Pre-test mean of the questionnaire was 11.12 with S.D. of 2.93 and the Post-test mean was 26.45 with S.D. of 4.94. The value of S.E. calculated out is 0.74. The “Z” value is 20.55 (significant at < 0.05). The result of Likert Scale indicates that 98% of mothers had supportive attitude towards vitamin A supplementation and 2% had neutral response towards vitamin A supplementation. Conclusion: The study concludes that before providing the Self-Instructional Module, majority of mothers had poor knowledge regarding vitamin A deficiency and supplementation, whereas after providing the Self-Instructional Module, majority of mothers had good knowledge. Hence, the Self-Instructional Module was highly effective (significant at 0.05).
